The village of
Nikolovo is located only 6-7 kilometers away from Ruse and is a favorite place
for walking by big city residents. Nikolovo’s name comes from the memory of a
local inter-brigadier who participated in the Spanish Civil War, Nikola Popov.
Although, more than 60 years have passed since the village was named, its
inhabitants are still divided into those of Gagalya and others of Lipnik –
these two settlements were united by the authorities in 1955 to form the
village of Nikolovo.
The former village of Lipnik is associated with the large linden forest, later
enriched as a forest park with an area of about 20,000 acres. It is the largest linden massif in
the whole of Bulgaria and the walk along its alleys at the end of May and the
beginning of June is a real holiday for the senses.
